Labour councillors joined London Assembly member John Biggs and MP Rushanara Ali at a key public consultation meeting last night on Boris Johnson’s plans to close Bow fire station and halve the number of fire engines at Whitechapel station.

The London Fire Brigade have released details of increased response times for local wards in London. The statistics reveal that 41 local wards in London will now fall outside of the target response time, due to the Mayor’s decision to cut 12 fire stations, 18 fire engines and 520 firefighters. The wards include Bow East, Bow West, Bromley-by-Bow and Mile End East in Tower Hamlets.

A new river crossing for East London is one step closer today, with the launch of Transport for London’s River Crossings report. Respondents expressed a high level of support for a new road tunnel between Silvertown and the Greenwich Peninsula.

The proposed tunnel at Silvertown would run underneath the River Thames to alleviate pressure on the Blackwall Tunnel. The tunnel would be accessible to all sizes of vehicles.

Last week, a report released by the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation and the Famine Early Warning Systems Network estimated that the number of people who died during the 2011 Somalia famine was much higher than initially anticipated at almost 260,000.

 

Shadow Minister for International Development, Rushanara Ali, has urged the need for the UK Government to ensure that warnings for similar humanitarian crises are responded to much earlier and faster in order to avert the huge loss of life witnessed during the recent East Africa famine.

Labour councillors have urged residents to support a London-wide demonstration against the Government’s plans to dismantle key elements of the capital’s NHS. The demo has been called by a coalition of London residents, medical staff, trade unions and health campaigners to raise awareness of what is being described as one of the biggest threats to the NHS since its inception. The rally comes following Government moves to introduce market competition and untrammelled privatisation to the NHS.

The Spice Merchants in Westferry has been nominated by local MP, Jim Fitzpatrick, to take part in the prestigious Tiffin Cup competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in the country.

Following the Tiffin Cup 2012, MPs have for the 8th year running, been asked to nominate a restaurant in their constituency. Last year a record eighty nine South Asian restaurants were nominated from around the country.

Labour Councillor Rachael Saunders has criticised the Government for cutting nurses and putting patients’ lives at risk after figures showed that major A&E units across East London are struggling and have consistently missed their waiting times targets over the last six months.

Staffing shortages across the NHS have left A&E departments over-stretched and under severe pressure, with reports of ambulances queuing outside and patients left on trolleys for hours on end.

It has been revealed this week that aGovernment minister has admitted that they do not know how many affordable one-bed homes are available in Tower Hamlets for those needing to downsize as a result of the Bedroom Tax.

The revelation came in response to a Parliamentary Question from Labour MP Rushanara Ali who asked the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what assessment he had made of the availability of affordable one-bedroom homes for single-person households to downsize into in the borough.
