The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority is holding public consultations in the City of London, Tower Hamlets and Newham next week to discuss proposals to close 12 fire stations, including Bow and Silvertown fire stations. Local London Assembly Member John Biggs is urging residents to attend to discuss the closures and plans to cut 18 fire engines, including one from Whitechapel and axe 520 firefighters.

New doubt was cast over the fate of the borough’s famous Henry Moore Sculpture, Old Flo, last week after the Tower Hamlets Mayor failed to clarify the situation regarding her sale. The sculpture was earmarked by the Mayor for sale last year against widespread opposition from residents and arts patrons such as Olympics Supremo Danny Boyle. Serious concerns were also raised about the ownership of Old Flo that have not yet been resolved.

Figures out yesterday show Tower Hamlets is the fifth least peaceful local authority in the country have been seized on by Labour councillors as further evidence against Boris Johnson’s plan to halve the number of police stations in the borough.

The UK Peace Index which was released by the Institute for Economics and Peace found that over the last decade the borough had an average homicide rate whichwas almost two-and-a half times the national average. The study also found that violent crime and public disorder was more than double the national average in Tower Hamlets.

Labour councillors in Tower Hamlets have teamed up with their counterparts in Hackney to promote an ambitious move to wrestle back control of the capital’s high streets. At last week’s Council meeting Labour urged the Mayor to sign the borough up to a cross-borough and cross-party request to Government which would give Councils more power to control the proliferation of betting shops on their high streets.

Poplar & Limehouse MP Jim Fitzpatrick has urged the Government not to scrap the ASBO in light of new figures which show Tower Hamlets is London’s second worst ASB hotspot.

A detailed breakdown obtained by Freedom of Information Requests and research by statisticians from the House of Commons Library has revealed new figures, which show in Tower Hamlets there were 17,287 anti-social behaviour incidents recorded by the police in 2012.

Rushanara Ali MP is backing Labour’s proposals for a Compulsory Jobs Guarantee to tackle long-term unemployment, following the release of the latest unemployment figures.

According to the Office for National Statistics, long-term unemployment showed no signs of falling in Bethnal Green and Bow, following an annual increase of 3% to March 2013.

Government figures revealed by the Labour Party have shown that over two thousand households in the borough will see their household income drop when the Conservative led Government’s benefits cap comes into force in September.

The cap will disproportionately Londoners as it fails to take the high cost of housing into account. As a result the cap will mean those struggling on low wages as well as those out of work may be affected. The figures released by Labour reference the number of households in the borough which have received a letter from the Government warning them that they may be affected when the cap comes into force.
