Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Manchester after last night's heartless and cowardly attack. Nothing can ever justify the murder of innocent children.

“Londoners know the dreadful impact these attacks can have and we all stand in solidarity with the people of Manchester. It is more important than ever that we stand shoulder to shoulder to show that these cowardly attacks will not divide us, nor do the attackers represent any race or religion.

“It is only right that there is an increased police presence on our streets to reassure and protect our community. I would urge residents to report anything suspicious to police.”

I am horrified by the horrendous events in Manchester last night. My thoughts are with families and friends of those who have died and been injured.

Today the whole country will grieve for the people who have lost their lives.

I have spoken with Andy Burnham, the mayor of Manchester, who has fully briefed me on the operational response in the city.

I would like to pay tribute to the emergency services for their bravery and professionalism in dealing with last night's appalling events.

I have spoken with the Prime Minister and we have agreed that that all national campaigning in the general election will be suspended until further notice.

Changes by Transport for London to the 100 bus route which serves Wapping could have a damaging impact on the ability of the elderly and less physically able to get around the capital, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets has said.

The comments came after the amended bus route was introduced earlier this month. Ahead of the change the Mayor wrote to TfL Managing Director of Surface Transport Leon Daniels after TfL proposed changes to, and a shortening of, the 100 bus route warning of far fewer opportunities for Wapping residents to change to other buses.
