Responding to the news that Sadiq Khan has called for an urgent comprehensive programme to tackle acid attacks, Unmesh Desai, Labour’s policing spokesperson on the London Assembly, said:
"It is absolutely right that the Mayor is making this call today.
"When we questioned the Mayor and the Assistant Commissioner about this at City Hall, we heard there was anecdotal evidence that some people were choosing to use acid instead of knives as it was easier to get hold of and the sentences if caught were more lenient. While we must continue to address the underlying problems that lead to any form of violent crime, we must also urgently do all we can to deter people from carrying out acid attacks.
"Those who receive devastating injuries from an acid attack have to deal with long-term consequences. I do not see why perpetrators should not have to do the same."
