In 2006 Tower Hamlets council's 51 council seats were up for election. Labour won 26, holding on to its Majority by just 1, with the Tories on 7, Respect  12 and the Lib Dems 6.

Following the victory in the Weavers by-election victory and defections from Respect and the Liberal Democrats, the Labour Party now has 33 Councillors, with the Tories on 8, Lib Dems 4 and "Respect" 6.
