After their AGM last night the Labour councillors in Tower Hamlets have announced the new Executive Committee and Leadership team which they hope will guide them to victory in the 2014 Mayoral and Council elections.
- Leader of the Labour Group – Cllr Sirajul Islam
- Deputy Leader of the Labour Group – Cllr Rachael Saunders
- Labour Group Chair – Cllr Carli Harper-Penman and Cllr Ann Jackson (job share)
- Group Secretary – Cllr Judith Gardiner
- Chief Whip – Cllr Carlo Gibbs
- Media and Communications Officer – Cllr Shiria Khatun
- Party Liaison Officer – Cllr Abdal Ullah
- Policy and Campaigns Officer – Cllr Amy Whitelock
The new team will work closely with Labour’s two MPs and Mayoral Candidate John Biggs to develop a new, ambitious and exciting policy agenda for the next election.
The Labour Group elections saw a lot of change following the announcement earlier this year from Cllr Joshua Peck that he would stand down as the Leader of the Group to pursue plans to adopt a child with his partner.
Next Monday Labour councillors will meet to announce their new Shadow Cabinet and their nominations for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Council.
Newly elected Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Sirajul Islam, said:
“It is a great honour to be elected to lead the Labour Group. Over the next year our united Labour councillors will work together with residents, our colleagues in Parliament and our Mayoral Candidate John Biggs to stand up for Tower Hamlets and protect against the Tory Government’s ideological cuts.
“As we move towards next year’s Mayoral and Council elections it is more important than ever to have a strong Labour voice standing up for residents and speaking for all the communities in our borough, that is what our new Labour team will be focused on.”
Labour’s Candidate for Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said:
“Tonight Labour Group have elected a strong team, utilising talents across the party and from a diverse range of backgrounds. I will be working closely with Sirajul and his colleagues over the next year and beyond to deliver a better future for Tower Hamlets.”
Outgoing Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Joshua Peck, said:
“The last two years have shown that even in opposition Labour councillors can make a real difference to residents. Whether leading the campaign against Boris Johnson’s fire and police cuts or saving the borough's advice services from closure, Labour have always represented the best progressive and inclusive values.
“I would like to congratulate Sirajul and others on their election and I look forward to working with them to secure a Labour victory for the people of Tower Hamlets at next year’s elections.”
