Labour call for investigation into biased East End Life

The political bias in the taxpayer funded East End Life freesheet should be investigated and stopped according to Labour councillors. The opposition politicians wrote to the Tower Hamlets’ independent auditor on Monday demanding that he take action to stop the use of taxpayer money to so blatantly promote the independent Mayor.

Earlier this month it was revealed that in the three months to August there were 158 quotes and 92 pictures of the Mayor and his supporters in East End Life. By contrast over the same period non-independent councillors, including the ceremonial Speaker of the Council, were only pictured 13 times and quoted 4 times.

Writing to the District Auditor the Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Sirajul Islam, urged a full investigation stating:

“We believe that the bias in East End Life coverage, especially in the run up to next year’s local elections is an inappropriate use of public funds and request that you investigate the processes in place which have allowed this flagrant waste of tax payer money to continue.”

Leader of the Tower Hamlets Labour Group, Cllr Sirajul Islam, said:

“People need to see action is being taken to stop the Mayor abusing his position and running the Council as his own personal publicity machine. The bias that has been revealed in East End Life makes it clear that tax-payer money is being run for the Mayor not for the people of the borough as it was intended.”

Labour’s candidate for Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said:

“This use of East End Life for political self-promotion is totally wrong. I have already pledged to immediately review East End Life if elected but it is vital that residents can trust their money is being used appropriately in the meantime, I hope the independent auditor will act to ensure this.”
