Labour demands a new deal for leaseholders

At a meeting of Tower Hamlets Council Cabinet, local leaseholder Helen Charles asked the Mayor to support the campaign for a new deal for Tower Hamlets Homes leaseholders.

This is part of Labour’s ongoing campaign to secure a new deal for leaseholders – including greater transparency, better engagement with residents and a fairer charging system.

Cllr John Pierce, of Tower Hamlets Labour Group, said:

“It’s disappointing to see that the Mayor hasn’t fully grasped the level of concern there is from residents. Councillors have been inundated with complaints, queries and concerns about Tower Hamlets Homes leaseholders’ issues over last months.

It’s time now that the Mayor acts urgently to resolve these issues. We are working with MPs Rushanara Ali and Jim Fitzpatrick and leaseholders to ensure that we get a new deal for THH leaseholders.”

Helen Charles, a THH leaseholder in Bethnal Green, said:

“Thousands of leaseholders across Tower Hamlets have been sent bills for as much as £40,000 for works to their properties – to be paid in as little as 12 months. For huge numbers of residents, these bills are simply unmanageable in such a short space of time.

I joined the campaign because leaseholders deserve a new deal, including an extension to the repayment period for major works from 12 months to 10 years, greater transparency on all charges and a proactive approach when engaging with leaseholders. The Mayor should be supporting this campaign instead of ignoring our concerns.”
