Tower Hamlets Labour Group last night elected a new Leadership team to take the group forward.
The first Labour Group AGM meeting last night saw Cllr Rachael Saunders elected as Leader with Cllr Shiria Khatun as Deputy Leader.
The full list of appointments made at the meeting is:
- Leader of the Labour Group – Cllr Rachael Saunders
- Deputy Leader of the Labour Group – Cllr Shiria Khatun
- Chief Whip – Cllr Khales Ahmed
- Labour Group Chairperson – Cllr David Edgar
- Media and Communications Officer – Cllr Ayas Miah
- Policy and Campaigns Officer – Cllr John Pierce
- Labour Party Liaison Officer – Cllr Clare Harrisson
- Labour Group Secretary – Cllr Danny Hassell
Speaking after the meeting, newly elected Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Rachael Saunders, said:
“The recent election results were disappointing for us. It is our job now to listen to what local people are telling us, to learn, and to do all we can to calm tensions and work for unity as we move forward. Local people chose Labour councilors to be the largest group on the council and we will do all we can to repay that trust.
“The year ahead will be tough for Tower Hamlets, with the Conservative/Liberal government targeting our public services for budget cuts. The Labour team, with our excellent local MPs Jim Fitzpatrick and Rushanara Ali, John Biggs in City Hall and a committed, diverse, hardworking group of local councilors, will continue to work hard to represent local people, fighting for the resources our area needs.
“I would like to thank Cllr Islam for his hard work, commitment and loyalty. I look forward to him continuing to play an active and central role in Labour Group.”
Outgoing Labour Group Leader, Cllr Sirajul Islam, said:
“It was a privilege to serve as Labour Group Leader over the last year, particularly the opportunity to lead Group into such an important election. Whilst we may not have won the mayoralty we made a lot of headway and set out a clear vision for our borough. Thanks to our work policies like free school meals for all primary school pupils may now become a reality.
“I wish Cllr Saunders all the best with her new role. Whilst I may no longer be Leader I will remain as dedicated as ever to serving the residents of Tower Hamlets, and Labour Group, to the best of my ability.”
