Mayor Rahman absent on crime

Despite rising crime in the borough and resident concerns about gangs, Mayor Rahman today failed to show up for a meeting with the new head of the Metropolitan Police, Bernard Hogan-Howe.

London's most senior policeman was meeting the capital's council leaders and Mayors to listen to the concerns they have about crime and policing in their boroughs. Even though crime is rising in Tower Hamlets, Mayor Rahman failed to take this chance to raise concerns with Hogan-Howe.

Councillor Joshua Peck said:

'Yet again the people of Tower Hamlets have been let down by this absent Mayor. With crime and anti-social behaviour going up, along with real concern about gang related activity, this was the Mayor’s chance to raise these issues directly with the man in charge of tackling them.

By not bothering to attend, or even send someone in his place, Mayor Rahman has missed the opportunity to address these concerns head on and ensure Tower Hamlets remains high on the Commissioners agenda”
