Further evidence of the bias in Tower Hamlets Council’s tax payer funded newspaper has been revealed after Labour obtained new coverage statistics from the Council.
The figures show that over the last six months East End Life has featured 320 quotes from the Mayor and independent councillors compared with only 15 from Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Respect councillors combined. The paper also ran 164 images of the Mayor and his supporters as opposed to the 26 featuring opposition councillors including the ceremonial speaker of the Council.
The revelations come only a month after Labour wrote to the District Auditor demanding that he take action to prevent further abuse of tax payer money after similar figures made clear that the Mayor is using East End Life as his personal political mouthpiece.
Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Sirajul Islam, said:
“East End Life was set up for the Council to tell local people about the services available to them not as a political mouthpiece for Lutfur Rahman. These figures leave no doubt that the Mayor and his supporters are abusing the paper for their own political benefit.
“To be wasting millions of pounds of tax payer money on East End Life at the same time as cutting Council services shows the Mayor’s priority is his own self-promotion rather than the needs of residents.”
