Tower Hamlets Council holds Mayor to account

At Full Council on Wednesday 26th November, Labour held Lutfur Rahman to account following the best value inspection of Tower Hamlets Council and the response of the Secretary of State.

Cllr Rachael Saunders, Leader of Tower Hamlets Labour Group, said: “At the Full Council meeting last night we held Lutfur Rahman and his administration to account.  We asked for answers to what should be straightforward questions; answers on each of his failures of the statutory best value duty; answers on taking grants from the poorest areas in Tower Hamlets; answers on the dodgy sale of buildings and on the nine ongoing fraud investigations.

Maybe more importantly, we demanded answers on lower GCSE results - the first dip in attainment in ten years, dirty streets and his failures on crime. We called on the Mayor to reverse his proposal to close local nurseries that parents rely on.

As usual, he answered no questions at all. Tower Hamlets deserves better.”

Cllr Shiria Khatun, Deputy Leader of the Labour Group, said: “Mayor Lutfur has not only brought our good borough into disrepute but he has also let down every one of our residents.

He has no regard for transparency as the PWC report clearly states where the Mayor has misused his executive powers to sell council buildings as well as to give grants to those groups that appear to have supported his mayoral election campaign.

These are just some of the areas where he misused his powers. Because of the Mayor we have Commissioners sent in by the Secretary of state to manage important functions of the council. Mayor Lutfur needs to seriously consider his position.”
