Unmesh Desai - GLA Member for City and East

Unmesh Desai AM has been a member of the London Assembly since May 2016. As the Assembly Member for City and East, Unmesh represents constituents across Barking and Dagenham, City of London, Tower Hamlets and his home borough of Newham.

A councillor in Newham since 1998, Unmesh is always keen to champion the issues that matter to local people. As the Cabinet member responsible for tackling Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour, Unmesh has a track record on Newham Council of driving efforts to boost local safety – work he is keen to pursue on the London Assembly.

Having lived in East London for over 30 years, Unmesh is passionate about supporting local businesses, boosting local services and delivering local jobs for the East End. Improving transport links and tackling the housing crisis will also be a priority for Unmesh on the London Assembly.

A GMB member, Unmesh is also a trustee of the West Ham United Foundation and President of Newham Cricket Club. Unmesh previously worked as a solicitor
